How to send money on WhatsApp with Ria: Your complete guide

If you already use WhatsApp to keep in touch with family, you can send them money from the same app. Ria’s WhatsApp channel lets you send from the U.S. to 180+ countries without downloading a separate app. You start the conversation, answer a few prompts and pay on our secure website.

This guide covers what to have ready before you start, how each step of the chat works, what you can send and what to do if something goes wrong.

What you need to send money on WhatsApp with Ria

Have these ready before you open the chat and the whole transfer goes a lot faster:

  • A WhatsApp account linked to a U.S. phone number

  • A Ria account. If you’re new, the chat prompts you to create one for free.

  • A Visa or Mastercard debit card. Credit cards aren’t supported on WhatsApp right now.

  • Your recipient’s full name, exactly as it appears on their ID

  • For bank deposit: your recipient’s bank account number and bank details

  • For cash pickup: the city and pickup location your recipient prefers

The name matters more than people expect. If what you type doesn’t match your recipient’s ID, collecting cash or receiving the deposit can get complicated. A quick text to double-check the spelling saves a lot of back and forth.

Where you can send money with Ria on WhatsApp

Our full network of 180+ countries is available through WhatsApp, so you can reach family in most places you’d send with the Ria app or website.

The one condition is where you send from: right now, the WhatsApp service is only available for customers sending from the U.S.

Delivery options depend on the destination country. The chat shows what’s available once you pick where you’re sending. If you send often to Mexico or Colombia, our Mexico and Colombia pages cover rates and delivery partners in more detail.

How to send money on WhatsApp, step by step

Here’s the full flow, from your first message to the confirmation:

  1. Save our WhatsApp number, +1 (240) 820-2742, or tap this link to open the chat directly.

  2. Send any message to start the conversation. “Hi” works fine.

  3. Choose the country you’re sending to.

  4. Enter the amount you want to send in U.S. dollars. Each transfer can be up to $999.99, fees included. The chat shows the current exchange rate and fee before you commit.

  5. Choose your delivery method, such as bank deposit or cash pickup.

  6. Add your recipient’s details: their full name plus bank account information or a pickup location, depending on the method you chose.

  7. Review the summary. It lists the amount, fee, exchange rate and what your recipient will receive. Confirm if everything looks right.

  8. Follow the link to Ria’s secure website and enter your debit card details to pay.

  9. Head back to WhatsApp. We send a confirmation message with your reference number. Share it with your recipient if they’re collecting cash.

The payment step happens on our website, not inside WhatsApp, so your card number doesn’t go into a chat message.

After your first transfer, the chat lets you send to the same person again, so repeat transfers take fewer steps.

How payment works on WhatsApp

WhatsApp transfers are paid by debit card only. Credit cards, bank account payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay aren’t available through the WhatsApp channel.

If you need one of those options, you can use the Ria app or website instead.

When it’s time to pay, the chat hands you off to Ria’s checkout page, where you enter your Visa or Mastercard debit card details.

Your bank may ask you to approve the payment with 3D Secure, an extra security check where you confirm the purchase with a one-time passcode sent by text message or through your banking app. Once the payment is approved, you go back to the chat for your confirmation.

If your card is declined, check with your bank that it’s enrolled in 3D Secure and try again. You can also finish the transfer in the Ria app or on our website.

Transfer limits on WhatsApp

These are the current limits for sending with Ria on WhatsApp*:

  • Per transfer: $1.00 to $999.99, fees included

  • Daily limit: $999.99

  • Monthly limit: $7,999.99

Because the limit includes fees, the amount you send plus the fee has to stay at or under $999.99.

The daily limit is the same as the maximum for a single transfer, so one transfer at the top of the range uses up that day’s limit.

For larger amounts, use the Ria app or website, where limits can be higher depending on your account verification level.

* Higher limits may apply once customers are verified.

Delivery options: bank deposit or cash pickup

Bank deposit and cash pickup are the two most common ways to receive a WhatsApp transfer. Here’s how each one works.

Bank deposit

With a bank deposit, the money goes straight into your recipient’s bank account. You’ll need their account number and bank details. Timing depends on the receiving bank, and deposits usually arrive within minutes to one business day.

Cash pickup

With cash pickup, your recipient collects the money in person at a Ria pickup location. They’ll need a valid government-issued ID and the reference number from your confirmation message. Funds are typically ready within minutes.

How to track your transfer

Once your money is on its way, you have a few ways to check on it:

  • Go back to the Ria WhatsApp chat and check the status of your transfer.

  • Log in to your Ria account at riamoneytransfer.com. Your WhatsApp transfer shows up in your transfer history next to any others.

  • Keep your reference number handy in case your recipient’s bank needs to trace the payment.

How to stay safe when sending money on WhatsApp

Scammers use messaging apps too, so a few habits help keep your money where it belongs:

  • Chat with Ria only at +1 (240) 820-2742. Saving the number in your contacts makes it easy to spot.

  • Enter card details only on Ria’s checkout page after the chat hands you off. If anyone asks you to type card numbers or passcodes into a chat, stop.

  • Keep the one-time passcode from your bank to yourself.

  • Send money only to people you know and trust. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) keeps a list of common scams and how to spot them.
