FAQ

Common questions about sending money to BBVA.

Is BBVA the same as Bancomer?

Yes. BBVA and Bancomer are the same bank. Bancomer was the earlier name, and since 2019 the bank has operated simply as BBVA México. If you are sending money to a recipient in Mexico, their account is with BBVA México even if they still call it Bancomer. Ria deposits directly into that account using the recipient’s CLABE.

What is BBVA in Mexico, and is it a Mexican bank?

BBVA México is the Mexican arm of BBVA, a Spanish banking group headquartered in Spain. The parent company is Spanish, but BBVA México is the largest bank in Mexico and holds accounts for millions of people across the country. A recipient’s BBVA México account can receive money sent from abroad through a service like Ria.

How do I send money to BBVA Bancomer?

To send money to a BBVA Bancomer (BBVA México) account, you need the recipient’s name and their 18-digit CLABE. With Ria, you choose bank deposit as the delivery method, enter the CLABE, and Ria deposits the funds directly into their BBVA account in pesos. You can send online or in the Ria app and track the transfer through to delivery.

Is BBVA USA the same as BBVA Mexico?

No. They are separate institutions. BBVA USA, formerly BBVA Compass, was the bank’s US operation and was acquired by PNC Bank in 2021, so those accounts are now PNC accounts. BBVA México, formerly Bancomer, is the Mexican bank. When you send a remittance to Mexico, the recipient’s account is with BBVA México, and Ria deposits to it directly.

Can I use my BBVA account in Mexico?

If you hold a BBVA México account, yes, you can use it across Mexico and receive deposits into it, including transfers from abroad. If your account was with the former BBVA USA, it is now a PNC account and does not operate in Mexico. To move money into a BBVA México account from another country, Ria delivers a direct bank deposit using the recipient’s CLABE.

How do I collect money sent to BBVA?

For a transfer sent to a BBVA México account as a bank deposit, the recipient does not need to collect anything in person. BBVA posts the money directly to their account, and it is available to use once the deposit is processed. With Ria, both you and the recipient can follow the transfer status until the funds land.

How long will BBVA hold my deposit?

For a money transfer sent through Ria as a BBVA bank deposit, the funds reach the recipient’s account once the transfer is processed, and availability follows BBVA’s standard posting times. Timing depends on when the transfer is sent and BBVA’s processing hours. You can check the status at any point in the Ria app or website.

Does BBVA do currency exchange?

BBVA México holds accounts in Mexican pesos, so money sent from abroad is converted to pesos before it reaches the account. When you send with Ria, the exchange is built into the transfer, and you see the rate and the exact peso amount your recipient will receive before you confirm. There is no separate exchange step for the recipient.
