The key differences between an ACH transfer and a wire transfer are speed and cost. A money transfer with the ACH network is usually low cost but may take up to three days to reach its destination.

A wire transfer, both domestically and for international money transfers, usually happens the same day or sometimes instantly, though it comes with fees that might go up to $50.

An ABA routing number for both check and electronic money transfers has 9 digits.

Routing numbers, through an ACH transfer, can be used for both domestic and international money transfers, though it uses a different network for transfers abroad that is not widely accepted.

The SWIFT codes, on the other hand, are part of the network of the same name that has become the standard to process international wire transfers.
