How Ria's IBAN validator works
Paste the IBAN you've been given (spaces are okay).
Click Validate. We'll confirm the country code, check the length against the country standard, and run the mod-97 check-digit formula.
Review the breakdown showing each part of the IBAN: country, check digits, bank, and account.
If the format is valid, double-check it with your recipient and send your money with confidence.
A valid format isn't a guarantee that the account exists or belongs to the right person. Always confirm with your recipient before sending.
What happens if the IBAN is wrong?
If you enter an invalid IBAN when sending money:
Your bank will usually reject the transfer up front. You may still be charged a small return fee.
If the IBAN is valid but belongs to the wrong account, the money can land with the wrong person, and recovering it is on you.
Some banks let you cancel a transfer within a short window, but only if the funds haven't already cleared. Contact your bank immediately if you suspect an error.
Validating before you send is free, takes a few seconds, and is the easiest way to catch a mistake before it becomes a problem.
Common IBAN mistakes to watch for
Typos: IBANs are long and easy to mistype. Always copy and paste when you can.
Wrong country code: the first two letters must match the country where the account is held, not where the recipient lives.
Zeroes vs. Os, ones vs. Ls: IBANs use only A-Z and 0-9. There are no lowercase letters.
Print format vs. digital format: when paying online, drop the spaces. Some payment systems reject IBANs with spaces.
Old IBAN, new account: if your recipient changed banks, always ask for their latest details rather than reusing an old number.
IBAN validator vs. account verification
Ria's validator runs the same format checks banks use: country code, length, and the mod-97 check digit. That tells you the IBAN is mathematically valid.
Account verification (sometimes called Confirmation of Payee) is a separate step that confirms the IBAN actually belongs to the person you're paying. That check happens inside your bank or payment provider, not on a public tool. Use both together: validate the format here, then ask your recipient or their bank to confirm the account name before you send.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if an IBAN is valid?
Paste the IBAN into Ria's validator above. We'll check the country code, length, and run the ISO 13616 mod-97 check-digit formula in your browser. If anything is off, we'll tell you exactly which part failed.
Does a valid IBAN guarantee my money will arrive?
No. Validation confirms the IBAN is correctly formatted, not that the account exists or belongs to the right person. Always confirm the IBAN with your recipient before sending.
Why is my IBAN coming up invalid?
The most common reasons are a typo, the wrong country code, or extra characters pasted in by mistake. Re-copy the IBAN from your source, remove any non-alphanumeric characters, and try again.
Is Ria's IBAN validator free?
Yes. The validator is free, requires no account, and runs entirely in your browser. We don't store or log the IBANs you check.
Can I validate an IBAN without knowing the bank?
Yes. The validator confirms format only. You don't need to know the bank in advance. After validation we display the country and bank identifier extracted from the IBAN itself.
Is it safe to enter my IBAN online?
On Ria's validator, yes. The check happens in your browser and the IBAN is never sent to our servers. Be cautious with unknown sites. An IBAN on its own isn't enough to access your account, but combined with other personal details it can be used in scams.
